One Week After The 100mile Race

Posted in Running, Trail Running, Ultrarunning on June 27, 2010 by ultrarunnerbrianphilpot

I got out on a Sunday Test run, to see how the body is doing after running the Mohican 100 mile trail run. I have had some good pain through the week, but all in all not really bad. I got to pine lane to run, Pine Lane to Boston Mills and Back for a total of a little over 8 miles. The run went really good! I ran an easy pace but ran everything, up and down the hills. Everything ran out fine over all, and that’s a good thing! I have the Burning River 100 at the end of July, and that’s why I really had to see how things are so I can get ready! I really thought it was going to be a bad run, temps in the high 80’s and humid. So time to get ready fast for another 100 mile race. Congrats to all that ran the Western States 100! This year has seen alot of action in Ultramarathon’s, both big race’s and lttle!
Enjoy the week!

Western States 100 in full swing

That’s right! They are off and running at the Western States 100! I’m getting some updates off of Twitter. iRunFar on Twitter is the best for updates. All the big guns seem to be pumped up and I can’t wait to see how it plays out! My recovery from The North Face Mohican 100mile trail run is going slow but great! I feel so bad for all the runners of the 50 mile and 100 mile race the DNF’d! It seems that it was the highest drop rate ever, about 66% for the 100 mile. It was one heck of a race, so much to deal with. Humid, Hot, rivers, rocks, roads, and my left ankle! But all is good! That race is over, now to the next the Burning River 100 at the end of July. I hope to get a good easy run in on Sunday, to get ready for the next race! Have a great weekend!

Mohican 100 race report part 2

Posted in Running, Trail Running, Ultrarunning on June 22, 2010 by ultrarunnerbrianphilpot

As I move on with a good pace through the trails, everything seems too fly by at this point. Moving good, feeling good the next aid stations south park, fire tower, and covered bridge go good still on pace for sub 24, but holding on through the night is another story! As I move up to hickory ridge aid station (59 miles into the race) I start running into runner coming apart. It has been a hard day, hot, humid, trails, rivers, and roads beating everyone up for 60 miles I can understand.
As we all move on to the start/finish line mohican adventures ( mile 64 ) but this is not the end! Most runners might want to drop, having to go back out at this point with night falling in fast! I change my socks, wow that felt so good! I have been in the same shoe’s and socks for 64 miles. I only running the race in one pair of La Sportiva Fire Blades! I grab my flash light to work with my head lamp for the long night. Grab my long sleve shirt to keep my body temp through the night, I tie it around my waist just on top of my fuel belt, and I’m gone. Not sure if any of the runners ever got back out on the trails!
As I move through night falls and I really start to slow. Everything gets foggy I think I was sleeping, I know I was moving, hit aid stations eat and drink and move! Taking it easy, I let go of my sub 24 it’s not worth rolling my bad ankle! As morning moves inthe miles have taken a toll on my legs! Me and a few other runners just power walk toward the finish! Then we allmost get run down by mountian bikers, we are on a bike trail. They know we are out on the trails but we are heading right into each other head to head so we run into each other fast! They are nice and try to move out of the way, but it still a shock after 95 miles! The last miles drag but I reach the finish 28 hours 25 min 102 miles.

Mohican 100 race report part one

Well, I started the morning messing with a ankle supporter. Just walking around Mohican Adventures before the start, I said it has to come off! I would carry it with me just in case! I put it on my fuel belt so I would see and feel it, just a reminder, just one hard roll and the race is over! The best money I ever spent! And didn’t even use it! The start of the race was nice, a nice cool morning for a race. I did get stuck behind some slower runners, not that is all bad. It was just slower than my set pace. We got a little rain befor the sun came up, it wasn’t good we where too have a hot “90” and humid day anyway!
The purple loop was fun for me and a left ankle! Wet rocks, roots and climbing up and around Little Lyons falls. The didn’t feel hot at first but it was humid. Everything just fell in place, drinking alot of water and heed. And shove some kind food in my mouth, whether I like it or not! Everything would turn after Rock Point aid station! Hitting the roads, back country roads around farms and the hot sun started to burn! I could see it beating down runners and me. I hit Mohican Wilderness aid station, the half way point of the road section and 30 miles into the race! I didn’t want to spend much time resting I had to get this road out of the way! I get back to rock point aid station the end of the roads. Back on the trails I felt like a new runner, after the road and sun beating me up for like 20 miles. My left ankle was so tight from the road ” like it was going to lock up ” so when I hit the trails all the random movement forced the left ankle to loosen up, but stay on my game to much roll the race is over! Yes this ankle was a pain in my ass all race long, with three hard rolls two weeks leading up to the race leaves me with a ankle I shouldn’t be running a 100 mile race! But who said I was a smart guy!
More later I need a nap!

Mohican 100 in 36 Hours

Posted in Running, Trail Running, Ultrarunning on June 17, 2010 by ultrarunnerbrianphilpot

Only 36 hours left to the kick off of the North Face Mohican 100. The taper is killing me, resting a left ankle so it hopefully hold up for a 100 miles. It will be high 80’s and afternoon thunderstorms. So hot and humid, we have been getting some on and off rain this week. I just hope the mud isn’t bad! Mohican can have really deep mud on the trails. We will run it hard and see what happens! I hope you all have a great weekend!!!
